Apple is staging a very big event next week. On Tuesday, September 10, the Steve Jobs Theater will be the venue and Apple will unveil three new iPhones, a new Apple Watch plus perhaps AirPods 3 and a location tile. It'll be a big deal, dominated by hardware and software developments, plus more news about subscription services like Apple TV+ and Arcade, a gaming service.
The iPhone will be the star of the show, but a new Apple Watch - part of the wearables division of Apple that is proving so crucial to the company's bottom line - will also be important and is likely to burnish its health credentials.
Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said earlier this year, “If you zoom out into the future, and you look back, and you ask the question, ‘What was Apple’s greatest contribution to mankind?’ It will be about health.”

AppleWe all know that good sleep is a major contributor to good health. So, the predicted arrival of sleep tracking on the Apple Watch is something to be welcomed.
Now, thanks to information that 9to5Mac says it’s learnt from sources inside Apple, that arrival is almost here.
Here’s what we know.
Apple Watch has always had health tracking so sleep monitoring is a logical next step.
AppleUntil now, there hasn’t been an Apple sleep tracking app on the Watch
Sure, there have been third-party apps such as Sleep Cycle, Sleep Diary, Sleep++, Sleepio, SleepMatic, SleepWatch and Sleepzy, all of which, for what it’s worth, are on my Apple Watch.
They're all fine but the truth is I rarely use any of them, whether because I forget or want something more tightly integrated with other Apple apps and devices, which would be a whole other thing.
Apple bought Beddit
The sleep monitor company was snapped up by Apple two years ago, back in May 2017.
I’ll be honest with you, every single time I’ve met an Apple executive since then, I’ve asked them when sleep tracking was coming. I’ve become quite boring about it.
Well, Apple is often slowish in its execution of new things, determined to get it right. So, two years on, it’s about time there should be some progress.
And Apple execs will be pleased I no longer bang on about it.
Sleep tracking may work with current models of Apple Watch like Series 4 (left) and Series 3.
David PhelanThe sleep tracking feature doesn’t need special hardware
It seems the feature doesn’t require extra hardware, so should work on some existing Apple Watch models, not just on the one that Apple announces next week.
There’s been some question about whether Apple will release an Apple Watch Series 5, or just refresh Series 4 with new metallic finishes such as ceramic and titanium. For the answer to that question, read this.

AppleWhat has taken so long?
Battery life. The battery life on the Apple Watch is good – nearer to two days than one. But that still means the habit wearers have of recharging the Watch overnight would have to change. You can't recharge and wear your Watch as you sleep at the same time.
It seems Apple has thought of this and has several answers. First, if you have more than one Watch, you can designate one as your night Watch.
If you only have one Watch, which is most people, after all, Apple can send you a reminder in the evening, suggesting you can charge your Watch before you turn in.
Some rival watches, like the Fitbit Versa 2 already have sleep tracking.
David PhelanHow will it work?
The Watch’s sensors will use the heart rate monitor, motion sensors and microphone to measure how deeply asleep you are. You can set an alarm on your Watch so that it vibrates to silently wake you and not your significant other as well. But if you wake before it's alarm time and get up, the alarm is automatically turned off – handy if you haven’t set the alarm to vibrate only.
A new complication for sleep tracking will be revealed with the announcement of the feature.
Much is still unknown, like how much detail there will be, whether there will be smart alarms, as found on some other sleep devices, that spot when you're moving from deep to light sleep and wake you at the optimum moment in your sleep cycle, so you awake refreshed.
This time next week, all will be revealed.
