A wealthy Mexican business magnate was arrested Sunday after his 11-year-old son died following a boating accident during a family trip off the coast of San Francisco.
Javier A. Burillo, 57, was busted on vehicular manslaughter charges at his waterfront Belvedere mansion following the boating trip earlier in the day with his two sons, 11 and 27, according to Tiburon Police Chief Michael Cronin.
Burillo is suspected of driving the vessel while under the influence near Angel Island when both sons went overboard as the boat hit a wave, authorities said.
The father was able to get his kids back aboard and drove them to Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, where the younger son died.
The older son was hospitalized with injuries to his leg.
In addition to vehicular manslaughter with a vessel, police charged Burillo with willful harm or injury to a child and operating a boat while under the influence.
Burillo’s property records show his full name is Javier Burillo Azcarraga, an affluent hotel and restaurant property developer in Mexico.
His family also founded Grupo Televisa SA, a Mexican media empire.
