The body of a missing New Jersey woman was discovered in a submerged car nearly six years after her mysterious disappearance, authorities said.
Vanessa Smallwood was identified as the remains found by commercial divers Thursday while removing debris from the Salem River, according to New Jersey State Police.
Smallwood, who was 46 at the time of her disappearance, had been last seen on Jan. 27, 2014, outside of a dry cleaner’s store in Cherry Hill, USA Today reported.
She was driving a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country van and her cellphone “recorded a ping” at 10:20 a.m. in Clayton, officials said.
“Since that time there has been no activity from the victim, to include her credit/debit cards,” an FBI missing-persons bulletin said.
The vehicle pulled from the river Thursday was a Chrysler, though the make and year are unknown, NJ.com reported.
Smallwood’s remains were brought for an autopsy to Southern Regional Coroner’s Office, USA Today reported.
No cause of death was released, but foul play is not suspected in the case, according to Salem County Prosecutor John T. Lenahan.
“Based upon the medical examiner’s examination, it does not appear as if there was any foul play,” he said, according to NJ.com.
